Sometimes it seems that people are just good at math from birth. Or, are good at learning languages. But for some of us, no matter how hard we put in, we are not given foreign languages ​​or integrals with logarithms.

There is plenty of scientific research behind the question of “talent” and “disposition”. Occasionally, some coworkers or family members are innately talented in certain areas, while others find it challenging to acquire these skills. What is leadership?

The straightforward definition is that leadership is the art of inspiring a group of people to achieve a shared objective or goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing employees and colleagues with a strategy to meet the company’s needs.

Passion: We all know leaders who are so in love with what they do and who believe so deeply in the idea. Passion cannot be bogus. Passion drives employees to do their best. Majority of the times, you are either passionate about something, or you are not. There cannot be something vague in this question.

Humality: A humble leader gives credit to others, who reward colleagues for their help, and who understands that the success of a company depends on everyone, not just the big boss. The ego does not develop overnight; your ego level is usually part of your innate personality.

Leadership traits that can be learned or acquired:

  • Communication skills: A productive communicator clearly explains tasks, deadlines and expectations while inspiring and motivating the employees or workforce in general. Of course, some people are naturally more expressive or outgoing than others, but it takes time and practice to become a good communicator.
  • Transparency: Employees almost always know when something is off. The best leaders talk about where the company is headed, what is going for or against them, and what needs to be bettered.
  • Trustworthiness: If it were an innate quality, we would indeed find more trust in the world. Inauspiciously, building trust is one of the hardest things to do, and it takes a long time to develop personal relationships, keep promises, and show that you honour your word.

The question still stands – is leadership innate or acquired? There is no exclusive answer, and it seems that this is a combination of both factors. A healthy balance of natural ability, combined with a desire to learn, ultimately gives us the best leaders.

Does this mean that if you are a humble and inexperienced communicator, you are never destined to become a leader? Of course not. Even the innate qualities listed above can be developed and improved. And even the most incomprehensible foreign languages ​​or the most challenging mathematics sections can be given to everyone with the right approach and due diligence.
